Torreglia

Ugo FoscoloLying just a few kilometers from Padua, the Euganean Hills form a naturalistic island protected by the Regional Park of the Euganean Hills. The hills are volcanic in origin, and rich with history.

Inhabited ever since the paleolithic age, they were well-known by the Romans because of the hotsprings at Montegrotto.

During the Middle Ages numerous castles, forts, monasteries and hermitages arose in the area.

During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, under Venetian rule, the Euganean Hills were embellished by splendid villas built by the Venetian and Paduan aristocracy.

The Euganean Hills were beloved by such poets and writers and Martial, Petrarch, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Foscolo, D’Annunzio, FrancescopetraarcaFogazzaro and Facciolati.

Francesco Petrarca, a guest of the Carrarese princes at Arquà, where he died, has left us a touching memory of the Euganean Hills, and the house where he lived is continuously sought out by visitors. In these hills, Ugo Foscolo wrote Le ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis. Fogazzaro used the famous monastery at Praglia as a setting for his novel, Il Santo.

Monte Rua

The town of Torreglia is perched high up in the hills. Its name may originate either from the towers erected in the area after the fall of the Roman Empire or from the bullfight organized by Antenor, the mythical founder of Padua, as an offering of thanksgiving to the gods.

Today Torreglia is one of the most delightful towns in the Park of the Euganean Hills, so rich in memory and poetic potency. Torreglia is dominated by Mt. Rua, where a famous monastery rises.
